Spatial Crossover Between Far-From-Equilibrium and Near-Equilibrium Dynamics in Locally Driven Suspensions

چکیده
We examine the response of a quasi-two-dimensional colloidal suspension to localized circular driving induced by optical tweezers. This approach allows us resolve over 3 orders magnitude in P\'eclet number (Pe) and provide direct observation sharp spatial crossover from far- near-thermal-equilibrium regions suspension. In particular, particles migrate high low Pe form strongly inhomogeneous steady-state density profiles with an emerging length scale that does not depend on particle is set $\mathrm{Pe}\ensuremath{\approx}1$. show phenomenological two phase fluid constitutive model line our results.

Crossover between equilibrium and shear-controlled dynamics in sheared liquids.
We present a numerical simulation study of a simple monatomic Lennard-Jones liquid under shear flow, as a function of both temperature T and shear rate .gamma. By investigating different observables we find that (i) there exists a line, T(.gamma), in the (T-(.gamma)) plane that sharply marks the border between an "equilibrium" and a "shear-controlled" region for both the dynamic and the thermod...
متن کاملFar-from-equilibrium distribution from near-steady-state work fluctuations.
A long-standing goal of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics has been to extend the conceptual power of the Boltzmann distribution to driven systems. We report some new progress towards this goal. Instead of writing the nonequilibrium steady-state distribution in terms of perturbations around thermal equilibrium, we start from the linearized driven dynamics of observables about their stable fix...
متن کاملFar-from-equilibrium computation
We study the possibility of developing far-from-equilibrium computational systems, in analogy with corresponding self-organizing physical systems. We review the computational models developed in analogy with physical systems converging towards equilibrium and the research related to the self-organization of far-from-equilibrium physical systems. Based on this review, we define several nonequili...
متن کاملIsotropization far from equilibrium
Isotropization occurs on time scales much shorter than the thermal equilibration time. This is a crucial ingredient for the understanding of collision experiments of heavy nuclei or other nonequilibrium phenomena in complex many body systems. We discuss in detail the limitations of estimates based on standard “linear” or relaxationtime approximations, where isotropization and thermal equilibrat...
متن کاملPath-ensemble averages in systems driven far from equilibrium
The Kawasaki nonlinear response relation, the transient fluctuation theorem, and the Jarzynski nonequilibrium work relation are all expressions that describe the behavior of a system that has been driven from equilibrium by an external perturbation. In contrast to linear response theory, these expressions are exact no matter the strength of the perturbation, or how far the system has been drive...
